Diagnostic Ultrasound Similar to the technology used to view developing babies, the heart and other internal organs, diagnostic ultrasound can give your doctor a better view of the soft tissues surrounding your spine. With more accurate information comes a more accurate diagnosis and more effective care. Diagnostic ultrasound is a painless, non-invasive procedure. While lying comfortably on a table, a water-based gel is applied to the patient's back and a hand-held device is passed lightly over the area. The image is transmitted to a monitor, from where the doctor can assess the patient's condition and offer a course of treatment. This test takes approximately 10-20 minutes to perform, after which the patient is free to resume all normal activity.
